I used to back when i was training back and traps very heavy. I think they allow you to isolate your training better when properly used.

I spent the better part of my life lifting HEAVY. To me, working on my grip strength was part of the game. Anymore, I don't lift heavy enough to need them.
Additionally, I 1) don't eat enought to benefit from lifting heavy and 2) already have the bulk, I just need to work on the tone.
But, that's just me!

I wouldn't be caught without my lifting straps on back and legs days BEFORE I started training for Men's Physique! Now I hardly use them now because I go for slightly less weight and more reps really focusing on muscle depth. Who knows though now that it's off-season till the PRO stage and time to add some size my straps will most likely get some love! However, when using straps I never strap up right away, I think you should really develop your grip strength and bust out the straps as you start to incorporate more of your "assisting" muscles and to help maintain proper FORM!
